The problem
Checking large areas of dense bushland for invasive species is often a
navigational nightmare. As you push your way through, one region can look much
like another, but how can you be sure that you're not covering the same area
twice or missing others completely?
The solution - Regi Rings!
These are galvanised wire rings with a colorful sprig of conspicuous flagging tape
The technique
A methodical approach is essential. Let's suppose we are weeding a rectangular
block of fenced bushland:
Our team of 3 workers form an 'emu' line in the south
west corner. The worker on the eastern end carries a bunch
of Regi Ring on a belt hook and begins by hanging
on on nearby twig before they start. |
|
Our team works steadily northwards. The worker on the western
edge closely follows the fence line while the others keep a
constant distance from their neighbours.
As they move progress, the worker on the eastern end continues
to deploy Regi Rings on twigs, each within view of its predecessor.
|
|
They arrive at the northern boundary, finishing their first
run. They turn around and move along to the adjacent strip to begin working
south. As before, the worker on the eastern end deploys Regi Rings
at regular intervals.
The worker on the western end follows the previous line of Regis
collecting them up for the next northerly run. |
